Split is one of the most stunning cities on the Adriatic coast, famous for its Roman history, sun-soaked seafront, and Mediterranean charm. But how accessible is Split for wheelchair users?
As a local-based accessible travel agency, we know the city inside and out—and we’re here to give you a realistic, practical guide to visiting Split with a wheelchair.

The Old Town: Beautiful, But Bumpy
Let’s start with the heart of Split: Diocletian’s Palace and the Old Town.
- Accessibility: The area is mostly flat, but paved with 2,000-year-old limestone slabs—they’re uneven, shiny, and can get slippery.
- Curb cuts & ramps: In most parts of the Old Town, there are no curbs at all (just flat entrances), but some alleyways have 1–2 steps.
- Good to know: The main streets (Peristyle, Riva, Marmontova) are passable with manual or electric wheelchairs. Smaller side streets can be tight or sloped.
✅ Tip: We recommend using larger wheels or power assistance if your wheelchair allows it. Some manual users prefer gloves due to the smooth, slippy surface.

The Riva Promenade: 100% Wheelchair Friendly
The Riva is Split’s famous waterfront promenade—and the good news is, it’s completely accessible.
- Smooth paving, wide walkways, flat surface
- Outdoor cafés with step-free seating
- Beautiful sunset views, accessible benches, and rest areas
✅ Tip: The Riva gets busy in summer. Early mornings or late afternoons are more relaxed and cooler.
Beaches: Some Accessible, Some Not
Split has several beaches, but only a few are accessible with ramps, pathways, and wheelchair-friendly toilets.
Most accessible beaches in Split:
- Žnjan Beach
- Flat entrance, wheelchair parking, accessible toilet
- New and re-designed beach
- Concrete platforms and ramps into the water
- Quiet areas available
- Bačvice Beach
- Closer to the center
- Gentle slope and promenade access
- Can be crowded and noisy in summer
🛑 Beaches to avoid: Kašjuni and Firule may have stairs or rocky terrain.
✅ Tip: We can arrange beach wheelchairs or help with transfers to accessible beaches if needed.

Hotels & Accommodation
Split has several fully wheelchair-accessible hotels and apartments, but:
- Many listings on Booking.com say “accessible” but don’t meet proper standards
- Step-free entrance does not always mean a roll-in shower
✅ Tip: We’ve personally inspected properties. When you book through Accessible Horizon, we guarantee verified accessibility.
🚻 Accessible Toilets in Split
- Public accessible toilets: limited, but exist in city center and Old town, Žnjan Beach, Mall of Split, and City Center One
